World Cup: Vinicius rescues Brazil from defeat against Morocco

Vinicius Junior celebrates his goal

Vinicius Junior produced a moment of brilliance to snatch a point for Brazil in their 1-1 draw against Morocco in a Group C clash at the 2026 World Cup on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti started Alison in goal while Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhaes, Roger Ibanez, and Douglas Santos started in defence.

The Italian coach opted for a star-studded midfield of Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Pacqueta.

Igor Thiago led the line and he was flanked by Vinicius Junior and Raphinha.

However, despite parading World class players, it was Morocco that impressed with scintillating football that blew Brazil away in the opening minutes.

As at the 30th minute, Morocco had recorded 12 shots – the most Brazil have faced in a World Cup match since their encounter with Mexico in 2018.

The Atlas Lions failed to convert their numerous chances despite being the dominant side.

However, Ismael Saibari lifted the ball over Allison following Brahimi Diaz’s sublime pass to open the scoring in the 21st minute for Morocco.

It was Morocco’s first goal against South American opposition at the World Cup, having failed to do so against Peru in 1970 and Brazil in 1998.

13 minutes later, Vinicius brought Brazil back into the game with a stunning effort in the box to make it 1-1.

The goal was a respite for Brazil as they struggled to contain the Moroccans.

Pacqueta’s effort was saved by Bounou late in the first half as it ended 1-1.

Both teams failed to add to their tally in the second half to settle for a share of the spoils.

In the other Group C game, Scotland defeated Haiti 1-0 thanks to a goal by John McGinn.

Scotland are on top of the log with three points ahead of their second game against Morocco on Friday.

Brazil will take on Haiti in search of their first win of the tournament on Saturday.
