Rivers United dumped out of CAF Champions League

Rivers United played out a 2-2 draw against Cote d’Ivoire’s San Pedro to crash out of the CAF Champions League on Sunday at the Uyo Township Stadium.

It was a disappointing display from the NPFL side after they played out a 3-3 aggregate draw following a 1-1 draw away, they bowed out of the competition due to the away goals rules.

Rivers United went 2-0 behind in the first half but they fought back to make it 2-2 in the second half but it was too little too late.

Chijioke Mbaoma reduced the deficit for Rivers United from the penalty spot in the first half, making it 2-1.

The hosts continued to miss chances before another penalty from Iyowuna Douglas made it 2-2 with two minutes of regulation time to play.

It was a disappointing end to Rivers United’s CAF Champions League journey for the second consecutive season.

Nigeria’s other representatives in the competition, Enugu Rangers defeated Benin side AS Sobemap in Togo 5-4 on penalties after both legs ended 1-1 respectively.

The NPFL Champions will take on MC Alger in the next round of the CAF Champions League in October.
