Rivers Utd, Shooting Stars to get $100k despite crashing out of CAF CL, CC
Rivers United and Shooting Stars will each receive $100,000 from the Confederation of African Football despite both teams crashing out of the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup.
Rivers United were dumped out of the Champions League on away goals rule after they played out a 2-2 draw at home against San Pedro of Ivory Coast on Sunday. The first leg ended 1-1 in Ivory Coast last week.
Shooting Stars ended their continental assignment following a 2-0 defeat to CS Sfaxien in Tunisia after a 1-0 win in Abeokuta last week.
Despite their exits, both clubs are set for a huge windfall from CAF.
It would be recalled that CAF announced in August that teams eliminated in this round will get a solidarity payment of $100,000 each as part of its continued investment in supporting participating teams and increasing engagement in its inter-club competitions.
CAF said in a statement: “The winners of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League will receive $6m in prize money, while the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup champions will earn $4m,” CAF announced.
“Clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds will each receive a solidarity payment of $100,000, part of CAF’s continued investment in supporting participating teams and increasing engagement in its Interclub competitions.”

The NPFL Champions will take on MC Alger in the next round of the CAF Champions League in October.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, El-Kanemi Warriors will now face Raja Casablanca in the next round.
The first leg is set to take place at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne between October 16 and 18.
Raja will host the return fixture in Casablanca between October 23 and 25.
The winner over the two legs will secure a place in the lucrative group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
