Finidi credits defensive solidity for Rivers Utd’s NPFL away form
George Finidi, the head coach of Rivers United has credited his team’s defensive solidity for their away form in the ongoing 2026/27 EuroMatch Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
The coach who was speaking in a post match conference after Rivers United secured a point in a 0-0 draw against Abia Warriors at the Enyimba International Stadium Aba in Sunday’s Matchday 8 clash said that his team has worked hard this season.
“I think we’ve really worked hard this season. We haven’t lost a match, despite the fact that we’ve been knocked out of the (2026/2027) CAF Champions League.
“Yeah, I think the defence is doing well, but we still have to monitor the defenders properly because the accumulation of matches is beginning to take its toll. We’ll see if others can come in and perform at the same level.” Finidi said.

The former Enyimba manager who had a short stint as coach of the Super Eagles also disclosed that he is happy with draw against Abia Warriors despite the tough nature of the game because the points shared will count at the end of the season.
“If I’m happy with the draw? Sometimes, at the end of the season, all these points will count for a lot, you know. Last season, we lost the league title by just one point. So, let’s see if this time around, we can maintain this form for a little longer,” Finidi stated.
Rivers United currently sits in second place in EuroMatch NPFL standings with 18 points from 8 matches, with 13 goals scored and 2 goals conceded. The club will play their next NPFL fixture against Barau FC on Sunday.
