England Coach Thomas Tuchel has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to drop the likes of Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, and Phil Foden from the 2026 World Cup squad.

The quartet of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire were left out of the England 26-man squad announced on Friday by Tuchel.

The former Chelsea manager left out a lot of key players who are big names in their respective clubs.

Palmer and Foden have both struggled for form this season with the Chelsea star also battling with a groin injury.

Tuchel included Manchester City’s John Stones, who has been struggling with injuries this season while Ivan Toney, who plays in Saudi Arabia also got a call-up for the tournament.

Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White was also left out after an impressive season with the club.

He is the top-scoring English player in the Premier League alongside Ollie Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, on 14 goals.

Gibbs-White recorded a total of 18 goal contributions in the league more then ant other midfielders in the squad.

Meanwhile, Tuchel revealed that he picked the squad he and his staff believed in to help England achieve their objectives at the World Cup.

He said: “A lot of factors play into that nomination process. Like I said, I love the difficult decisions, and I love the tough decisions – they bring a certain edge. That is what you need to go all the way. It is hard to please. In the end, we have to pick the squad that we as a staff are convinced of and really believe in.

“You feel the love of your coach, and you feel the trust. In the end, it comes down to this – who do we really trust? The connection has to be there. Somehow, it is a bit of a tool to challenge myself. What would I think from the outside? Mostly it is about the energy, connection and trust between me and the players.

“Everything I know about international football and everything I hear about international football is that it is about chemistry. It is so obvious at this moment that teams win titles.”

England will battle it out with Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L. They will open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17 before taking on Ghana six days later and Panama on June 27.
