The Austrian national team bagged three points after emerging victorious for the first time at the World Cup finals since 1990 with 3-1 win over hapless debutants, Jordan.

The team led by German tactician Ralf Ragnic proved too strong for Jordan in the intense Group J World Cup opening match played at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (Levi’s Stadium) in Santa Clara.

The deadlock was however broken in the 20th minute when Romano Schmid opened the scoring for Austria with a phenomenal curling strike from outside the box following a fierce battle between Austria’s possession play and Jordan’s rapid counter-attacks.

Austria held on to the 1-0 until the end of the first half but five minutes into the second half, Ali Olwan made history for his country by scoring Jordan’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup to level the score at 1-1.

However, Jordan were made to rue their fortunes in the game when defender Yazan Al-Arab, deflected a Stefan Posch corner into his own net in the 76th to hand Austria a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Austria scored on more goal in the game after a handball violation forced a penalty call with veteran striker Marko Arnautović stepping up to score the resultant kick in the 102nd minute of the game to make it 3-1.

Austria will trade tackles with Argentina in their next group game at the Dallas Stadium on June 22, while Jordan will face Algeria on the same day at the San Francisco bay Arena.
