Alexander Zverev defeated Flavio Cobolli 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 to win the men’s singles of the 2026 French Open title at Rolland Garros on Sunday.

The German player produced a stunning performance to win his first major Grand Slam title after losing his three previous Grand Slam finals.

He had previously also lost in six Slam quarter-finals and seven semi-finals, alongside his three final defeats.

He enjoyed a great start by winning the first set before losing the second set to Cobolli and also emerged victorious in the third set.

Cobolli fought back in the fourth set to force a tie break before Zverev showed his quality to wrap up the victory in the fifth set.

Zverev became the first German man to win a major tournament since Boris Becker at the 1996 Australian Open.

He is now the fourth player to claim tournament victory at all four ATP big title levels [Grand Slam, Masters 1000, ATP Tour Finals and Olympics] after Andre Agassi, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.

Zverev expressed his delight at winning the French Open while also describing the court as special.

He said: “This court is so special to me in so many ways.

“I have had the best moments of my life on this court and the worst moment of my life on these courts. I was laying in the corner four years ago over there with seven broken ligaments and two fractured bones.

Meanwhile, Cobolli congratulated Zverev while admitting that he deserved to win the title.

He said: “I want to start with you Alex. If someone asked me who deserves this title, I always said you,” Cobolli said to Zverev during the trophy ceremony.

“It has been an honour to share the court with you today. I am happy for you but I am also sad as I was close and I felt it. Now that you have achieved your dream, let me win next time.”

Zverev has won 25 ATP Tour–level titles in singles, including a major at the 2026 French Open, and three trophies in doubles.

He has also won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and the 2018 and the 2021 ATP Finals.
