Preview: Can Barca win El Clasico to seal title? See all the stats, facts

El Clasico

Barcelona will welcome Real Madrid to Camp Nou on Sunday knowing that a win would seal the 2025-26 La Liga title following a dominant campaign.

The Blaugrana have been in an imperious form in the league, showing consistency while Real Madrid have flattered to deceive in a season characterised by infighting, which has seen key players become boxers on the training pitch.

Real Madrid have not had the kind of preparations they would be proud of ahead of the clash with the conversations about the club ahead of the Clasico centered around the clashes among players.

On Friday, The club fined midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde a combined 1m euros following a dressing room row between the pair.

Both players attended an internal disciplinary meeting on Friday and accepted fines of £432,000 (500,000 euros) each.

In a week where a defeat in the El Clasico would hand Barcelona the La Liga title, the players chose the wrong time to practice their boxing skills which will be good news for Barcelona.

The Catalans have enjoyed a serene and trouble-free preparation ahead of the encounter.

Hansi Flick’s team are 11 points clear of Real Madrid and a positive result of a win or a draw will be enough for them to win the league on Sunday in the El Clasico for the first time since 1932.

Only once before has the Clásico definitively led to the Spanish champions being crowned, but that was back in 1932, when a 2-2 draw saw Madrid win the league.

Earlier in the season, Real Madrid ended a run of four consecutive defeats against Barcelona with a 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso.

However, Barcelona regained the momentum with a 3-2 win in the Spanish Supercopa final in January in Saudi Arabia.

In all competitions, Barcelona have won five of the last six meetings between the two teams, but Real Madrid have won five of their last 10 contests, including a 4-0 at Camp Nou in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey in April 2023.

The first match between the clubs took place on May 13, 1902, in the Copa de la Coronacion (a predecessor to the Copa del Rey).

Barcelona won the match 3-1 in the Spanish capital against Madrid FC (the club later became Real Madrid).

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Key Stats/ Facts

Hansi Flick will become the fourth coach in the history of Barcelona in the 21st century to win the league in his first two seasons in charge, after Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde.

Following their 4-3 victory last season, Flick could become the second Barça coach to win his first two home La Liga matches against Madrid in the 21st century, after Guardiola (first three).

Barça are on a roll, too. They have won their last 10 La Liga matches, their best run under Flick.

Only four coaches in the club’s history have achieved 11 consecutive league victories: Guardiola (a run of 16 and another of 11), Frank Rijkaard (14), Luis Enrique (12) and Tito Vilanova (11).

Madrid have lost two of their last five La Liga away games (W2 D1), as many defeats as they suffered in their previous 17 away matches in the competition (W12 D3 L2).

Álvaro Arbeloa will take charge of his first Clásico. Only four Madrid coaches have debuted with a victory in the clash in an away match at Barcelona: José Quirante in 1929 (1-2), Carlos Queiroz in 2003 (1-2), Bernd Schuster in 2007 (0-1) and Zinedine Zidane in 2016 (1-2).

None of the last 12 La Liga meetings between Madrid (eight wins) and Barça (four) have ended in a draw, the longest run without a league Clásico finishing level since a streak of 18 matches between 1977 and 1986 (10 Madrid wins, eight Barça wins).

At home, Barcelona have won two of their last three La Liga meetings with Madrid (L1), twice as many victories as they managed in their previous seven home games against them in the competition (W1 D3 L3).
