Nworgu wins Nigeria’s first gold medal at 2026 Commonwealth Games
Esther Nworgu produced a stunning performance to win the first gold medal for Nigeria in the para powerlifting category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday.
It was a record-breaking performance from the veteran as she stormed to an impressive 119.0 points, a new Commonwealth Games record in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.

In a dominant display by Team Nigeria, Esther Oyema secured the silver medal with a total of 115.0+ points, ensuring a one-two finish for the country in the women’s lightweight category.
England’s Olivia Broome won bronze after lifting 119kg for 106.6 points.
Team Nigeria has now won one gold and two silver medals on the first day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
