Ezuruike wins first medal for Nigeria at 2026 Commonwealth Games

Paralympic champion Roland Ezuruike produced an impressive performance to win Nigeria’s first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday.

Ezuruike recorded 153.9kg to match England’s Mark Swan, who won the gold medal on countback, leaving the Nigerian star to settle for the silver medal.

Malaysia’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin claimed bronze with a lift of 153.5kg.

Similarly, another Nigerian weightlifter, Ibrahim Dauda, finished fifth in the same race with a lift of 140.1kg.

Ezuruike was delighted to win Nigeria’s first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

He said: “I’m grateful to have won Nigeria’s first medal at these Games. Every time I step onto the platform, my goal is to make my country proud. Of course, every athlete wants gold, but this silver is a good way for us to begin, and I believe more medals will follow for Team Nigeria.”
