Nigeria open Commonwealth Games with 3×3 basketball victory
Team Nigeria opened their campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on a victorious note when the men’s 3×3 basketball team defeated Cayman Islands 21-17 on Friday.
The Nigerian team showed their quality with a dominant performance in their first game with the likes of Esosa Okundaye and Ikechukwu Nwamu making six points each.
Up next for the team is another clash against Australia billed for 5.25pm (Nigerian time) on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, Clinton Opute participated in the first individual game for Nigeria in the men’s 200m Swimming individual medley.

He finished 6th in his heat in 2:15.40, missing out on qualification for the next round.
In Boxing, Nigeria’s Ayomide Foly Hassan suffered a 4-0 defeat to Refiloe Thai of Lesotho in the men’s 70kg Round of 32.
The 3×3 basketball is a variation of basketball played three-a-side, with one backboard and in a half-court setup.
This is the second time the 3×3 basketball and its wheelchair counterpart will be staged at the Games following its debut at the 2022 edition.
