Fernandes sets Premier League record in Ipswich Town thriller
Bruno Fernandes set a new Premier League record with a stunning hat-trick to lead Manchester United to a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Portuguese midfielder became the first player to register 20+ Premier League goal involvements in 2026 with 15 assists and seven goals.
Leif Davis have Ipswich Town the lead in the 29th minute before Bruno Fernandes restored parity with a screamer just before halftime.
Jacob Greaves diverted into his own net in the 56th minute to give Manchester United a 2-1 lead.
He fouled Matheus Cunha five minutes later as Fernandes scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-1.
He added the third goal with a close range finish in the 68th minute before Bryan Mbeumo added the fifth goal to make it 5-1.
Chuba Akpom scored a consolation goal for Ipswich Town to make it 5-2.
The Red Devils earned their first win of the season in style after a 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening day of the season.
Manchester United manager, Michael Carrick was full of praise for Fernandes following another match-winning performance.
He said: “We’ll take a few more of them [hat-tricks]. He showed his quality today. Through the middle of the pitch, particularly Youri, Kobbi and Matheus played some really good football.

“Bruno’s done what he’s good at. He’s won awards this week and bounced back from last week. Three goals, fantastic performance.
“We’re not getting carried away. We weren’t overly down last week, everything wasn’t wrong. It was something we can improve on. Today, there are still things we can get better at.
“The result was great. We haven’t cracked it, there’s a long way to go and we’ll get ready for next week.”
Similarly, Fernandes described the win as massive and his hat-trick as the best feeling.
He said: “It was massive. We lost three points last week, so it was all about getting the three points, giving a good performance to our fans.
“First game at home, they’ve been waiting so long for this so we wanted to, not make up for last week because you can’t get six points in a game, but we wanted to start the game on the front foot, be strong.
“It’s the best feeling in football and then doing a hat trick in a game at home with our fans, it’s something amazing that I’m very proud of. But the main thing is that I need to score goals to help the team to win games.
“Today, I did that and I hope that I can do much more and help my teammates score goals too.”
Manchester United will be back in action against Everton next Sunday while Ipswich Town will face Liverpool at home on Friday.
