Ballon d'Or contenders
It is D-day to decide who wins the 2026 Ballon d’Or award after months of debates, predictions, and controversies by fans and lovers of the game surrounding the possible winner of this year’s edition organised by France Football.
Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Lamine Yamal (Barcelona), Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) and Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) lead a star-studded list that features heavy representation from European champions Paris St-Germain.
Ahead of the award ceremony which is set to take place at the London Palladium, Kane is favourite to become England’s first Ballon d’Or winner in 25 years when the award is presented today driven by his massive individual output as a player.
The England captain who is viewed by bookmakers as the overall favourite due to his heavy trophy haul, heads into the ceremony as the favourite, having scored 73 goals last season for club and country.
Kane finished last season winning major silverware with his German club carting home the Bundesliga league title and DFB-Pokal double with Bayern Munich.
Yamal who had a productive season for club and country is also favoured by bookmakers to win this year’s Ballon d’Or. The 19-year-old claimed the La Liga title with Barcelona and also lifted the World Cup with Spain.

Mbappe also churned out elite numbers including; 42 goals in 44 games for club and country. The French striker scored 25 La Liga goals to win the Pichichi, 15 goals goals as the Champions League top scorer and 10 goals to win the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot.
The Real Madrid striker also became the leading scorer in World Cup history with 12 overall goals, however, he finished last season without winning a trophy for club and country.
Mbappe’s seeming lack of a major club or international trophy with Real Madrid or France during the calendar year is now the primary argument used against his candidacy compared to Kane or Yamal.
The former PSG striker is considered to be behind Kane and Yamal in the pecking order as voters traditionally put major team trophies won by players into consideration.
Reports say international glory and deep tournament runs heavily weigh the voting process along club performances which puts Kane and Yamal ahead of Mbappe.
Fans and pundits are now counting down the clock as they await the announcement of a winner for this year’s Ballon d’Or which has created immense suspense following a monumental World Cup season.
