Fans criticise move by NFF to appoint Eguavoen interim Falcons coach
Scores of critics on social media have hit hard on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over its decision to appoint Austin Eguavoen as the new interim coach of the Super Falcons.
Eguavoen, who is currently serving as the NFF Technical Director, was on Tuesday named as the interim head coach of the Falcons on a temporary basis in a move which shocked many.
The former Super Eagles defender is now expected to lead the senior women’s national team through their upcoming 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros this October.
This appointment marks his first time managing a women’s national team, and it follows the departure of former Falcons coach, Justine Madugu after the team missed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
As expected, the move by the NFF to appoint Eguavoen as the interim head coach of the Falcons has drawn the ire of soccer fans on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Some say his appointment as interim coach of the Falcons is a big joke when there are other qualified candidates while others are of the opinion that Eguavoen lacks self respect and awareness for accepting the role.

However, sports writer Solace Chukwu is in support of Eguavoen’s recent appointment saying by virtue of the fact that he is the Technical Director of the NFF, he (Eguavoen) is perfectly placed to step in as interim coach of the Falcons.”
@TheOddSolace wrote; “If you did not have a problem with Austin Eguavoen being @thenff Technical Director to begin with, then you should have no problem with him being interim Super Falcons coach. Typically, the TD should be perfectly placed to step into precisely this sort of breach in the short term. So, by itself, this decision by whatever/whoever constitutes the NFF these days is not absurd. It tracks.
