CAF CL: ‘Not a bad result’ – Finidi reacts to Rivers Utd draw at San Pedro

George Finidi, the head coach of Rivers United football club has declared that picking up a 1-1 draw against their opponents San Pedro in their first leg of the CAF Champions League encounter is not a bad result.

San Pedro started brightly and capitalised on a moment of pressure just after the hour mark. Dosso L broke the deadlock in the 55th minute to put the home side ahead. 

Rivers United responded with character. The equaliser arrived in the 69th minute when Alex Oyowah after a beautiful team move provided a precise assist for Iyowuna Douglas, who finished clinically from inside the box to restore parity. 

Rivers United controlled large spells of the second half and created further opportunities. Although the hosts enjoyed more of the ball in the final ten minutes, the scoreline remained 1-1 at the final whistle.

Speaking after the game played at the Laurent Pokou Stadium, George Finidi said that avoiding defeat away to San Pédro was “not a bad result”

He also praised his squad’s resilience and character on the road, noting that taking a positive result back home ahead of the second leg in Nigeria puts them in a strong position.

The result against San Pedro gives Rivers United an edge going into the decisive second leg encounter which will be played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Sunday, 13th September 2026.
