Algeria crash out of World Cup after defeat to Switzerland

The Algerian national team became the latest African representative to exit the ongoing 2026 World Cup following a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in a Round of 32 game played at the vast BC Place in Vancouver.

The Swiss team took the initiative early in the game with a dominant display and their efforts paid off in the 10th minute when Breel Embolo scored following a brilliant solo run down the left flank by his teammate Johan Manzambi.

Nottingham Forest winger Dan Ndoye capitalized on defensive vulnerability to strike the ball into the corner in the 46th minute to increase his team’s goal tally to 2-0.

The Swiss team coached by Murat Yakin now advances directly to the Round of 16 and will remain in Vancouver to face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana.

The 2-0 victory over Algeria broke an 88-year jinx for the Switzerland, as the team secured their first World Cup knockout stage win since 1938

Algeria becomes the latest African team to exit the World Cup following the elimination of Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal, DR Congo and the Tunisian national team which was knocked out in the group stage of the competition.
