Why Pogba’s stay at Monaco may have failed

Paul Pogba

French midfielder Paul Pogba is now negotiating his way out of his contract signed with Ligue 1 side, Monaco after the club offered to terminate his deal.

Monaco has began the process of mutually terminating the contract of the player who began his professional career at Manchester United, playing several games in the 2011–12 season.

According to reports, the French club is pushing to terminate the player’s deal by September 1st to let 33-year-old Pogba find a new club this year.

Monaco has already informed the player’s camp about the decision and it is now left for Pogba, who is presently out injured to decide his next career move.

Recall that the club extended a helping hand to the World Cup winner following a lengthy suspension and a series of injures but the partnership has ultimately failed.

In this article, FirstDailySports highlights three reasons why Pogba’s difficult spell at AS Monaco, which stemmed primarily from long-term inactivity following a doping suspension, may have come to an end.

LENGTHY ABSENCE

One of the main reasons Pogba’s move to Monaco may have not worked out as expected was the player’s lengthy absence (18 months) from the game of football due to a doping ban.

Pogba joined Monaco in the summer of 2025 after his ban was lifted but he has suffered physical setbacks which restricted him to just six brief appearances totalling 115 minutes last season.

CYCLE OF RECURRING INJURIES

The talented midfielder who captained France to victory at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup and was named the Best Player of the tournament battled with recurring injuries at Monaco.

Pogba’s was compounded with a continuous cycle of thigh, calf, and ankle injuries which meant that he lacked proper competitive rhythm to make a meaningful appearance for Monaco in the 2025/26 season.

LACK OF MATCH FITNESS

The recurring injuries which halted his progress whenever he attempted to return to full training meant that Pogba was not able to recover 100% to endure the physical demand of the French league.

Pogba’s inability to build the robust physical foundation required to play at the top level may have now cost him his place at Monaco as the club seeks a worthy replacement ahead of the new football season.
