The 2026 UEFA Super Cup clash between PSG and Aston Villa kicks off on Thursday night at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg in Austria.

The Super Cup match is contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

PSG won the 2025 edition of the tournament after beating Tottenham on penalties 4-3 following a 2-2 draw in the regulation time.

The French giants will battle it out with Aston Villa, who won the Europa League last season, in the 2026 edition in Austria on Thursday night for an early opportunity to win a trophy.

If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes, the match goes straight to a penalty shoot-out to determine the winners.

40 gold medals are presented to the winning club and forty silver medals to the runners-up.

A total of 26 clubs have won the UEFA Super Cup, with Real Madrid being the most successful team with six trophies.

1. Real Madrid: 6. (2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2022, 2024)

The Spanish giants are the most successful team in the history of the match, winning six trophies with their first triumph coming in 2002 while they won the last one in 2024.

2. Barcelona: 5. (1992, 1997, 2009, 2011, 2015)

The Blaugrana are the second most successful team with five trophies, sharing the honour with Italian giants AC Milan.

Barcelona won their first title in 1992 and the last in 2015, coincidentally the last time they won the Champions League trophy.

3. AC Milan 5. (1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2007)

The Rossoneri have also won the trophy five times, alongside Barcelona with their first triumph coming n 1989 and the last in 2007.

4. Liverpool 4. (1977, 2001, 2005, 2019)

The Reds have emerged victorious four times in the encounter with their first victory coming in 1977 and the last in 2019.

Liverpool are the most successful English team in the history of the competition with four titles.

Chelsea are the only other English side to have won multiple Super Cups, doing so in 1998 and 2021. Manchester United and Man City have won one trophy apiece.

5. Atletico Madrid 3. (2010, 2012, 2018)

Atletico Madrid won their first trophy in 2010 before winning the last one in 2018.

The Spanish team are the only side in the list not to have won the Champions League.

The idea for the UEFA Super Cup came from Dutch reporter Anton Witkamp, who wanted a further test of who the best team in Europe truly was at the time of Ajax’s Johan Cruyff-led dominance.

As of 2024, the fixed amount of prize money paid to the clubs is €5 million for the winners and €4 million for the runners-up.

The PSG vs Aston Villa clash is slated for 8pm Nigeria time at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg in Austria.
