Why Cape Verde goalie Vozinha was in tears after stunning Spain draw
40-year-old veteran Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha was overwhelmed with tears of joy after his team held almighty Spain to a 0-0 draw at the Atlanta Stadium on Monday.
The Spanish national team was made to endure a disappointing start to the tournament as Cape Verde earned a priceless point with a battling display during the entire duration of the Group H encounter
After the referee blew the final whistle of the game, Vozinha who was named Player of the Match after making seven crucial saves during encounter broke down in tears.
While fielding questions from newsmen, he expressed deep sadness that his late grandparents, who raised him, and his mother were not there to witness his lifetime achievement on the world stage.
According to Vozinha, his mother was unable to attend the match in the US due to visa processing issues and financial costs of flying her over to witness the World Cup.

He said; “I cried because I grew up with my grandfather and grandparents. Unfortunately they are not here. They died a few years ago and they meant everything to me.
“They gave everything while they were still alive. My mum was also one of the reasons I shed tears because she couldn’t be here because of visa issues and funds for her to fly over to witness the World Cup.
“We couldn’t manage to raise funds to make sure she was here but I am very happy for the people of Cape Verde following 0-0 against Spain.” The player added.
Following his historic performance, Vozinha experienced meteoric online attention, with his Instagram following skyrocketing from 44k to over 3 million followers within hours.
Cape Verde will continue its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign following their historic 0-0 draw against Spain with a game against Uruguay on Sunday, June 21 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
