Tunisia appoints Renard as new coach after sacking Lamouchi

Harve Renald

Tunisia has moved swiftly to appoint former Zambia and Ivory Coast head coach Harve Renard to lead the Carthage Eagles at the ongoing 2026 World Cup, a day after sacking former international Sabri Lamouchi.

Reports say the two-time AFCON winning coach is expected to resume duties on Tuesday at the team’s training camp in Monterrey ahead of Tunisia’s second group game against Asian giants, Japan.

The appointment of the 57-year- old French tactician as the new coach of Tunisia is now recorded as the third time he is leading a different country to the World Cup tournament.

Renard led the Moroccan national team to the 2018 World Cup where he managed one draw and two losses in an early group stage exit.

He also guided Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup to a famous win over Argentina led by Lionel Messi but lost the next two games and failed to qualify for the knockout stage.

Following the scandalous 5-1 defeat to Sweden, the Tunisian FA decided to sack Lamouchi in what has been described as one of the quickest managerial firings in modern World Cup history.

The Tunisian FA moved quickly to establish an emergency hierarchy ahead of their next match against Japan with Renard now appointed to take immediate interim charge of the team at the World Cup.
