Sharapova lauds Serena Williams’ tennis comeback
Former world No. 1 tennis champion, Maria Sharapova has heaped praise on Serena Williams’ decision to return to the game despite still raising her young kids.
The ex-Russian tennis star who spoke to the media on Thursday described Serena’s decision to return to the tennis court as a strong example for many to follow.
According to Sharapova, she loves women who set such a strong example for their kids because when one leads by example, then there is no need to say too many things.
Sharapova who transitioned into a full-time venture capitalist, podcast host, and mother after officially retiring from professional tennis in February 2020, said that Serena’s commitment to the game is special.
“I love women that set such a strong example for their kids because when you lead by example, you don’t need to say too many things. That is your example,” Sharapova told PEOPLE.

“The fact that she’s able to do that and also train for that. It’s not just the moment on the court and walking onto center court, it’s all the training that you do,” she explained.
“It’s the recovery that you put in, the ways that you fuel your body, the preparation.”
“It’s the things that a lot of people don’t see,” Sharapova added. “So that commitment is really, it’s special.”
Serena made a surprise professional tennis comeback in 2026 at age 44, returning to the tour four years after stepping away from the tennis court.
She officially returned to the court on June 2026 at Wimbledon in London, teaming up with Victoria Mboko for a WTA doubles match win before withdrawing from the doubles draw with her sister Venus due to a knee injury.
