Paraguay defeat Germany on penalties to advance at World Cup
The Paraguayan national team defeated Germany on penalties to advance to the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2026 World Cup match held at the Boston Stadium on Monday.
The pulsating game ended 1–1 after extra time before Paraguay shocked the four-time world champions 4–3 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Paraguay got the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute when Julio Enciso nodded home a powerful header from a cross delivered by his teammate, Matias Galarza.
Germany clawed their way back into the match in the 54th minute when Arsenal striker Kai Havertz scored a glancing header via a floated cross sent in by Florian Wirtz.
Germany thought they had scored the winning goal of the game in the second half of extra time when Jonathan Tah bundled the ball in but his attempt was disallowed for a soft foul on the Paraguay goalkeeper after a lengthy VAR check.
The game later witnessed a chaotic penalty shootout which went into sudden death as both Germany and Paraguay failed to take their initial match winning opportunities.
However, Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill emerged as the star of the night with two pin point save while Jose Canale converted the historic winner to send Germany home.

The Paraguayan national team led by Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro will now advance to the Round of 16 where they will face either France or Sweden in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 4.
