Matchday! Super Falcons seek W’Cup redemption in S’Africa duel
The Super Falcons of Nigeria led by head coach Justin Madugu are gearing up for a must-win encounter against South Africa to remain in contention to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
With a place in the inter-confederation playoffs at stake, the Super Falcons will on Thursday (today) slug it out with fierce rivals the ‘Bayana Bayana’ of South Africa at the magnificent Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
Both teams were condemned to play the game after they both lost their quarterfinal matches at the ongoing 2027 WAFCON with Nigeria losing 1-0 Cameroon while South Africa lost to hosts Morocco 2-1.
Speaking ahead of the game, Falcons coach, Justin Madugu said that his team will do everything to redeem themselves with the second chance to qualify for the Women’s World Cup .
He said; “We have a second chance. We have this second opportunity. We are still going to do the best that we can,” Madugu said ahead of the game.
“We’re not leaving anything out. We’re going to put in all our best to make sure that we put smiles on the faces of our people because we know what it means to all of us as Nigerians.”

Coach Desiree Ellis of South Africa has disclosed that her team will bring their A game when they face the Super Falcons of Nigeria tonight in Morocco.
“It’s not a place we want to be, but we have been given another opportunity. It’s a very big opportunity to go on a very long journey, so we have to grab the opportunity with both hands. We obviously have to bring our A game…there’s no margin for error.
“The disappointment of losing the previous game is going to probably drive us to get a positive result. It’s not going to be an easy game, it’s the two big guns of Africa football,” Ellis said.
The winner of the game between Nigeria and South Africa will join nine other teams in an inter-confederation playoffs as they will battle for places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after missing out on automatic qualification.
In the other African play-in encounter set for Thursday, Ghana will also lock horns with rivals Cote d’Ivoire at the Moulay Rachid Stadium for a playoff spot.
