Late Canada winner knocks South Africa out of World Cup
Co-hosts Canada earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Africa at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday to advance to the 2026 World Cup round of 16.
The first half ended goalless as both sides struggled to find the breakthrough.
Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic late winner in the 92nd minute with a low strike from the edge of the penalty to book Canada’s place in the next round.
It was a bitter end to the encounter for South Africa, who qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
Canada will now face the winner between Netherlands and Morocco in the round of 16.
Canada coach, Jesse Marsch, was full of praise for his players for the impressive victory.

He said: “We talked about sticking to the plan, sticking to who we want to be. Playing aggressively, accessing the qualities.

Canada qualified for the tournament’s round of 16 for the first time ever.
