Koeman calls up Geertruida following Timber injury

Coach of the Dutch national team Ronald Koeman has been forced to call up Lutsharel Geertruida as a replacement for Jurrien Timber who has failed to recover from an injury.

Timber is set to miss the 2026 World Cup after failing to recover from a groin injury which also kept the versatile defender out of action for his club, Arsenal for a large spell this season.

The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from the injury and after consultation with the medical staff, it was decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan.

Despite featuring as a substitute in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, it was deemed that pushing through a major international tournament would be medically irresponsible.

Timber’s issues started in mid-March cutting short his role in Arsenal’s Premier League title run and he’ll head home after Tuesday’s friendly game against Uzbekistan.

Geertruida, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig will now replace Timber in Holland’s 26-man squad heading to the World Cup.
