‘I’m obviously missing the World Cup’, De Ligt reveals after surgery

Versatile Dutch international defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed that he will miss the forthcoming World Cup set to be staged in USA, Canada and Mexico.

The former Bayern Munich and Juventus defender who made the revelation in a post on social media said that after six months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option.

De Ligt who went into the history books in 2017 as the youngest player to debut for the Netherlands national team since 1945 said that he is disappointed that he will miss the World Cup after back surgery on Friday.

“After six months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left,” said De Ligt

“I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team the last 6 months and obviously missing out on World Cup but I’m looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans and feeling better again!”

Reports say that the Manchester United centre back decided to go under the knife after trying to manage a lingering back problem without surgery, the player has now undergone an operation that will keep him sidelined until the start of the 2026-27 season.
