Blockbusters! Five must-watch group stage matches of 2026 World Cup
The FIFA 2026 World Cup is set to kick off on Thursday, June 11 with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa at the Mexico City Stadium.
Viewing through the lenses of fans, FirstDailySports takes a look at possibly the top five must-watch matches of the group stage of the tournament.
1. Brazil vs Morocco (Group C)
This is the battle between the most successful team in the tournament and the most improved team based on their last performances at the last World Cup in 2022.
Brazil have played at every World Cup since 1930, the only nation with such a record, and they hold five titles from 22 appearances.
The Moroccans finished fourth in Saudi Arabia after losing 2-1 to Croatia in the Third Place match.
Brazil lost 4-2 to Croatia via penalty shootout after the regulation time ended 1-1 to crash out of the 2022 edition of the tournament in the quarterfinals.
Morocco became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, defeating Spain and Portugal before losing to France.
The Selecao are currently ranked sixth in the FIFA rankings while Morocco are in eighth following their impressive performances at the Nations Cup, where they lost to Senegal in the final.
Brazil finished fifth in the South America qualification zone to book their place in the tournament with eight wins, four draws and six defeats.
Head-to-Head: Brazil and Morocco have played each other exactly three times in official and friendly matches, with Brazil winning twice and Morocco winning once.

2. France vs Senegal (Group I)
2018 champions France will slug it out with Senegal in their first match of the tournament at the New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday, June 16.
The Les Bleus have finished second in the 2022 edition after losing to Argentina in the final, they will be hoping to go a step further this time around with the avalanche of talents in the squad.
They are currently on top of the FIFA rankings, while Senegal occupies the 14th position.
Didier Deschamps, who has been in charge of the team since 2012, will be stepping down after the tournament. He led them to their second World Cup triumph in 2018.
France topped their World Cup qualifiers group with 16 points, winning five and drawing one out of the five matches.
Senegal, who won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations also enjoyed a successful campaign in the qualifiers, earning 24 points to qualify for the tournament with an unbeaten record.
France are blessed with the likes of captain Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Desire Doue, and Rayan Cherki are players who can decide a game on their own.
Senegal will be led by Sadio Mane, who has been a key player for his country. He will be assisted by the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
Head-to-Head: Both teams have met once at the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Senegal emerging victorious 1-0 in one of the most shocking results in the tournament’s history.

3. England vs Croatia ( Group L)
England will begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia at the Dallas Stadium on Wednesday, June 17 under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel.
The Three Lions are ranked fourth while Croatia occupy the 11th position in the FIFA rankings.
England lost 2-1 to France in the 2022 edition to crash out in the quarterfinal stages while Croatia finished third after they lost 3-0 to Argentina in the semi-final before beating Morocco 2-1 win the Bronze medal match.
Under Thomas Tuchel, England are eyeing their second World Cup triumph while Croatia will be hoping to do better than their outing in 2022.
Head-to-Head: Both sides have met 11 times, the Three Lions have won six and Croatia have won three, with two draws along the way.
It will be the fourth time England have met Croatia at a major tournament with the most recent being the opening group-stage game of EURO 2020, when a Raheem Sterling goal at Wembley proved to be the winner

4. Argentina vs Algeria (Group J)
The defending champions will open their trophy defence against Algeria at the Kansas City Stadium on Wednesday.
Argentina occupy the third position in the FIFA rankings while Algeria are way below in the 28th position.
Lionel Messi is set to play in his sixth World Cup, joining the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Guillermo Ochoa as the only players to achieve the feat.
The Albiceleste defeated France 4-2 in the final of the 2022 edition after the extra time ended 3-3 while Algeria last appeared at the 2014 World Cup.
Argentina topped the World Cup qualifiers group in South America with 38 points.
Argentina vs Algeria Head-to-Head: Both teams have only met once and Argentina emerged victorious in the encounter, the match ended 4-3.

5. Uruguay vs Spain (Group H)
Spain’s third World Cup clash is against Uruguay at the Estadio Guadalajara, Zapopan in Mexico on June 27.
Spain will open their campaign against Cape Verde on June 15. However, their clash against Uruguay is expected to be tough because both teams are in the top 20 of the FIFA rankings.
Spain occupy the number two position in the world and Uruguay are in 17th.
The 2010 Champions finished top of their World cup qualifiers group with 16 points from six matches, earning five wins and one draw to finish the campaign with an unbeaten run.
Uruguay finished fourth in the South American zone with 28 points from 18 matches.
Spain are one of the favourites to win the tournament and they will fancy their chances against an Uruguay side coached by Marcelo Bielsa.
They crashed out of the 2022 edition after suffering a 3-0 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the second round.
Uruguay crashed out in the group stage in that tournament after they finished third in a group with Portugal, Ghana, and South Korea.
Spain vs Uruguay Head-to-Head: The two nations have met twice at the FIFA World Cup, with both matches ending in draws.
