Bellingham says Player of the Match should have gone to Ghana player
England midfielder Jude Bellingham has suggested that the Player of the Match award handed to him after the Group L game against Ghana should have been given to an opposition player.
The Black Stars of Ghana put up a battling performance to force a 0-0 draw against England with both sides failing to record an attempt on target in the first half of the game played at the Boston Stadium.
Bellingham also credited Ghana’s defensive setup for completely disrupting England’s attacking rhythm as the Three Lions struggled to break down a resilient Black Stars backline.
“I didn’t deserve it, to be honest,” Bellingham told FIFA’s in-house media.
“It should have gone to one of their (Ghana) lads who defended so well.

“I had a couple of moments, it was hard to get into the game and I’m grateful for whoever voted but it should’ve gone to one of their lads. Like always, it’s second-game fever with England. Win the first one, do well and draw the second.
“It’s OK though, they played for a draw that would’ve seen them go through and fair play to them.”
Both teams will play their next FIFA World Cup Group L matches on Saturday, 27 June 2026, with Ghana clashing with Croatia while England will try Panama for size.
