Belgium end Senegal’s World Cup dream with dramatic comeback
Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night after Belgium staged a remarkable comeback to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory after extra time.
The Teranga Lions looked firmly in control for much of the contest, taking a 1-0 lead into the break through Habib Diarra before Ismaïla Sarr doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half.
However, Belgium sparked an incredible late revival when Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans restored parity just three minutes later, forcing the match into extra time.

With penalties looming, Belgium were awarded a spot-kick deep into stoppage time of extra time following a VAR review.
Tielemans calmly converted from the spot to complete the comeback and send the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
Belgium will now face the winners of the Round of 32 clash between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Senegal bow out of the tournament after letting a two-goal lead slip.
