Reports say Pirlo accepted a verbal proposal saying yes to a project presented by Maldini and his team to become the new Italy coach on a long term plan.
Pirlo who was contacted after Guardiola and Ancelotti both turned down approaches is set to sign his contract in the upcoming days as he awaits for formal steps to be taken by Italian football federation.
His first major goal as coach of Italy would be qualification for the 2028 European Championship as the Italian FA works to finalize terms and clear his previous contract with UAE club United FC.
