Nigeria win 35 medals at swimming championships
Nigeria recorded a stunning performance at the 2026 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championships in Dakar, Senegal with 35 medals.
The team earned 17 gold, 14 silver and four bronze medals across individual and relay events.
The impressive performance drew praises from The Nigeria Aquatics Federation President, Lekan Fatodu, who congratulated the country’s junior and senior swimmers, as well as the coaches and technical officials, for their performance at the continental zonal competition.
He said: “The performance of our swimmers in Dakar is a thing of great pride for Nigeria. Winning 35 medals, including 17 gold medals, is a significant achievement and one that shows the commitment and hard work of our athletes, coaches and the entire technical crew.”

He also praised the junior swimmers for their performance, saying it encouraged them ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in Dakar from October 30 to November 13.
Fatodu said the championship had allowed the federation to assess the progress of its young swimmers while stepping up preparations for future international competitions.
It was Nigeria’s best performance in the championships in over a decade.
In a related development, Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) President Lekan Fatodu was elected to the Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Board, strengthening Nigeria’s representation in the administration and development of aquatics in West and Central Africa.
