Joshua vows to avoid Wilder’s mistake in Fury fight

Anthony Joshua

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has revealed an avoidable mistake made by hard punching American pugilist Deontay Wilder in his trilogy fight against Tyson Fury which he intends to avoid in the near future

Recall that Wilder and Fury completed a historic heavyweight trilogy from 2018 to 2021, with Fury winning the series by 2-1 overall.

In the first fight staged in December 2018 at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles, the bout ended in a split draw after Fury survived two knockdowns. In the second fight which took place in February 2020 at the MGM Arena, Fury beat Wilder via a technical knockout (TKO) in the seventh round.

Fury was also successful in the third fight between the pair which took place October 2021 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, knocking out Wilder in the seventh round of the fight.

Joshua who was reflecting on the trilogy ahead of his fight against Fury said that Wilder would have had better success against “The Gypsy King” if he had kept his composure.

“Wilder took those fights very personally, and that could be quite exhausting, especially when you hurt someone and try to finish them. You lose a lot of energy, and then Tyson comes back,” Joshua said in an interview with The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.

“Wilder could have gotten the job done if he was a bit more calm, cool, and collected; he could have learned from that. Wilder tried to take him out of there, Fury just managed to weather the storm and come back. But I don’t believe that would be me. I’m going to keep a calm head.” He noted.

The long-awaited heavyweight boxing match-up between Joshua and Fury is officially scheduled for Friday, December 11, 2026, at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

No fewer than 80,000 fans are expected to be in attendance when Joshua and Fury square up against each other in the upcoming bout which contract features no rematch clause for the loser.
