How Team Nigeria clinched 29 medals at Weightlifting Champs in Egypt
Team Nigeria weightlifting team ended their campaign at the 2026 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship on Sunday with a remarkable haul of 29 medals, comprising 14 gold, 13 silver and two bronze medals.
The Nigerian team produced outstanding performances throughout the competition, asserting their dominance against some of the continent’s best lifters across different weight categories.
Nigeria added five more medals on the final day of the competition, with Taiwo Mary Osijo bagging three silver medals in the women’s 79 kg category. She lifted 95 kg in the snatch and 116 kg in the clean and jerk, bringing her total to an impressive 280 kg.
Lucky Joseph, who competed in the +110kg class, nicked two bronze medals with his performance, including a snatch lift of 145kg and a clean jerk of 170kg, culminating in a total lift of 315kg.
The Nigerian women team put up impressive performances, earning a total of 12 gold and six silver medals, with Ruth Asuquo Nyong as the standout performer, winning three gold medals in the 48 kg, while Rofiat Folashade Lawal and Onome Omolola Didih won gold in their respective weight categories.
The men’s team also churned out respectable performances, with Edidiong Joseph Umoafia and Favour Omovigho Agboro each winning gold medals and multiple silver medals.
