Granit Xhaka rejects Chelsea, to stay on at Sunderland
Switzerland international midfielder Granit Xhaka has turned down a move to join English Premier League (EPL) club, Chelsea from Sunderland.
Despite signaling previous interest in reuniting with his former coach at Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, the player has now reaffirmed his commitment to the future of the Black Cats.
On the sidelines of the ongoing 2026 World Cup, Xhaka addressed the decision by affirming his respect for the club’s faith in him.

He noted: “I respect every club, but Sunderland believed in me from day one. The fans have given me everything, and I feel at home here… For me, loyalty still matters. I’m not chasing another move when I already believe in the project I’m part of.”
Chelsea reportedly had an opening £8 million bid rejected by the Black Cats, and Xhaka subsequently informed the club of his decision to stay after refusing to sanction his departure and always viewing him as untouchable.
The 33-year-old’s relationship with the Sunderland fans also played a big part in his decision to stay according to reports, while Sunderland always said he was unavailable for transfer despite Chelsea’s move and his relationship with Xabi Alonso.
