Flamingos thrash North Korea 3-1 to advance at U-17 WWC

Nigeria vs North Korea

The Flamingos of Nigeria tutored by Akeem Busari secured a surprising 3-1 victory against defending champions North Korea at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup taking place in Morocco.

The Nigerian team stayed true to the tactics which coach Busari hinted that his team will deploy before the match by adopting a compact game play to contain the excesses of their free-scoring Asian opponents.

The Flamingos opened scoring in the 15th minute of the game when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, registered her name on the score sheet to give her team a 1-0 lead in their final Group B match at the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead for Nigeria when she scored in the 38th minute of the encounter to make it 2-0 for her team with the first half of the game ending in favour of the Flamingos.

The victory against North Korea placed the Flamingos second in Group B and also secured an automatic ticket to the Round of 16 for the team while their opponents finished in first place due to superior goal difference after securing emphatic wins over Puerto Rico (6-0) and Poland (6-1).

However, Poland which secured a 6-2 victory against Puerto Rico finished third in Group B and like other teams, will now wait for the full Round of 16 bracket and official opponent pairings for the U-17 Women’s World Cup which are still being finalized as the final group stage matches conclude in Morocco.
