PSG coach Luis Enrique was pleased with his team’s performance despite the 1-0 defeat to Lens in the French Super Cup on Sunday.

The Trophée des Champions also known as the French Super Cup is the clash between the champions of Ligue 1 and the winners of the Coupe de France.

A few days after beating Aston Villa 2-1 to win the UEFA Super Cup, PSG faltered against Lens.

Captain Florian Thauvin scored the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute.

Enrique expressed mixed reactions after losing only his second final in charge of the team.

He said: “We missed some very clear opportunities. Whether it was Ousmane or Nuno Mendes, we created chances to equalise, but that’s football, you have to accept it.

“I was pleased with what I saw, I’m happy but frustrated. It’s been a unique week, with two finals in four days. We’ve got time to prepare the team, to improve our fitness and technique, and to prepare for the week in the best possible way to start the league.”

The Spanish coach said he and his coaching crew will analyse what led to the defeat ahead of their Ligue 1 opener on Sunday.

Enrique concluded: “It’s always frustrating. But we need to analyse, assess and recognise what we did, because I think we played a very good match.

“I’m very pleased with what I saw in the first half, but the score was 1–0. Football is incredible, it’s so unfair. But we also have to congratulate our opponents, Lens, because they scored one more goal than us and, in the end, that’s what matters in a match. In the second half, we tried to create even more chances.”

Enrique has won 13 trophies for PSG since joining the club in July 2023, he has managed 12 finals, losing only two.
