Austin Eguavoen

Super Falcons coach Augustine Eguavoen has set his sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics gold medal following the team’s 7-0 aggregate win over Comoros in the third round qualifiers.

Nigeria earned a comfortable 5-0 win in the second leg on Tuesday after a 2-0 win in the first leg.

Eguavoen said the players have put the WAFCON disappointment behind them and they are targeting the gold medal in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

He opined: “At the first meeting we had, we collectively agreed that we put the WAFCON disappointment behind us and set our eyes on the gold medal in the Olympics.”

The former Super Eagles coach admitted that the team would face stronger opposition as the qualifiers progresses but he is confident that the Super Falcons can survive.

Eguavoen said: “Going forward, we expect to meet tougher oppositions, no doubt about that. Super Falcons are number one in Africa. We have the quality, we have the personnel, we have the support.

“I am very, very happy. Congratulations to the girls. They made my day.

“Unfortunately, we lost Ajibade early in the game, but I think and I hope and I pray that the injury is very minute.”

The Super Falcons crashed out in the group stage at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games following defeats to Brazil, Spain and Japan.

They suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brazil, 1-0 defeat to Spain before exiting the games with a 3-1 loss to Japan.
