Broos confirms exit as South Africa coach
Belgium-born coach Hugo Broos has officially confirmed he will step down as head coach of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 74-year-old who led the team to a historic World Cup knockout stage appearance, cited his age as the main reason for retiring, though he may transition into an advisory role with SAFA.
“Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible! If they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting: that is something else. But football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day,” Broos told voetbalnieuws.

“I have already had a conversation with the chairman of the South African Football Association. He would like to keep me, but in a different role, as an advisor or something like that. I will return at the end of July to say a final farewell. I am curious to see what he will propose to me.”
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has already begun taking CVs for the position to ensure a smooth transition, with former Bafana Bafana boss Pitso Mosimane earmarked as one of the leading candidates.
Broos’ departure marks the end of a successful five-year spell in charge, which also saw him guide the squad to a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
