Barcelona consider legal action over Perez’s controversial remarks

Florentino Pérez

Spanish football club Barcelona FC is weighing up legal options against rivals. Real Madrid is following controversial comments allegedly made by president Florentino Perez.

Recall that Perez in his comments made on Tuesday evening highlighted that Barcelona paid over €8 million to former vice president of referees José María Enríquez Negreira over a 17-year period, calling it unacceptable for “whatever reason.”

Perez also alleged in his comments that the action coincides with Barcelona’s best sporting era, arguing that Real Madrid was robbed of as many as seven La Liga titles.

The Real Madrid chief stated that these actions coincided with Barcelona’s best sporting era, arguing that Real Madrid was robbed of as many as seven La Liga titles.

“I won 7 Champions Leagues and 7 La Liga… I should have won 14 La Liga but we got ROBBED.

“This season we robbed us 18 points in La Liga, we did a video on RMTV showing all the episodes.

“We are going to submit a dossier to UEFA so that they put an END to the case. The Negreira case, a sports corruption scandal, is still causing repercussions.

“There are referees from that era who are still officiating.” Perez added

The remarks, which have generated widespread debate in Spanish football circles, are said to have angered Barcelona officials, who believe the statement crossed acceptable boundaries and tarnished the club’s reputation.

The club has now issued an official statement indicating that their legal department is ‘‘carefully reviewing’’ the allegations made by Perez and that they are analysing the statements to determine next steps.

“Regarding the press conference called by the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, we inform you that our legal department is carefully studying his statements and accusations.” The statement by the club read in part.
