UAE warns UK on severity of ruling against Man City

Emirati officials have warned the UK Government that the severity of the ruling against Manchester City could impact the UAE’s appetite for future major investment and commitments in Britain, with the situation now affecting relations between the two countries.

The Emirati, according to reports, consider that the Premier League’s actions against Manchester City could undermine future large-scale investments in Britain and impact bilateral diplomatic relations.

The warning comes after an independent commission found the Abu Dhabi-owned club guilty of 114 out of 115 Premier League financial charges following years of investigation and a highly anticipated hearing.

The independent commission concluded that over a nine-season period spanning from 2009/10 to 2017/18 Manchester City engaged in systemic financial deception by artificially inflated its financial results by more than £900 million through “sham” commercial contracts.

Further reports says UK officials are also frustrated with their UAE counterparts and believe some figures in the Gulf state must have been aware of the extent of City’s wrongdoing despite previously insisting nothing improper had taken place.

The English Football Association in a statement issued on Friday said that it is carefully considering a decision and its implications and will take action where appropriate against Manchester City very soon.

“The Independent Commission’s decision has significant implications for the integrity of the game. We are carefully considering the decision and its implications and will take action where appropriate.

“As proceedings between the Premier League and Manchester City Football Club remain ongoing, we do not intend to comment further at this stage. We will, however, continue to monitor developments closely.” The statement concluded.
