Super Falcons thrash Egypt to reach WAFCON quarterfinals
The Super Falcons produced a battling performance to defeat Egypt 6-2 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
The win was enough to hand Nigeria the second spot in Group C as Zambia crashed out due to the head-to-head rule despite defeating Malawi 2-1.
Debutants Malawi topped the group while Nigeria finished second, Zambia settled for the third position and Egypt ended the tournament with zero points.
Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 21st minute from the penalty spot.
The former Barcelona forward was replaced by Monday Gift in the first half due to injury.
Gift added the second goal on the stroke of halftime.
The Egyptians reduced the penalty from the penalty spot through Nadine Ghazi before the end of the first half.
The Super Falcons continued the goal fest with Uchenna Kanu making it 3-1 in the 57th minute.

Charity Ucheibe made it 4-1 in the 80th minute, Nadine Ghazi reduced the deficit to make it 4-2 in the 84th minute.
Rasheedat Ajibade converted from the penalty spot in the 88th minute to make it 5-2 before substitute Joy Omewa added gloss to the scoreline to end the match 6-2.
The victory was enough to seal Nigeria’s place in the last eight of the tournament.
Super Falcons coach, Justine Madugu was full of praises for the players for the victory.
He said: “The players showed great determination. We knew we had to win and they delivered under pressure.”
Similarly, Asisat Oshoala also echoed the coach’s opinion with admiration for her teammates.
She said: “We knew what was at stake. We stayed together, fought for each other and got the result we needed.”
The Super Falcons will take on Cameroon in the quarter-finals.
