Serena Williams suffers first round exit at Wimbledon Open
Tennis legend Serena Williams suffered a first round exit at the 2026 Wimbledon Open following a 6-3 6-7 6-3 defeat to Australia’s Maya Joint on Tuesday night.
Williams was making a return to the singles category of the sports for the first time since 2022 after entering through a wildcard and she struggled to get going in the encounter, losing three straight sets.
She endured a rocky start in the opening set before recovering from a break down in the second set to force a tie-break.
Joint improved in the third set to wrap up victory for her first-ever win in the tournament after losing 11 WTA Tour-level matches in a row.
Williams became the second oldest player to appear in the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon.

Joint said she enjoyed the clash with Serena while praising her good start.
She said: “I was up until 2am thinking about it. My legs weren’t moving in the warm-up, I don’t know how I got a good start in the match. She has such aura. Even though I haven’t won many matches this year, I still had the belief I could win and I took advantage of the moment and enjoyed it.”
Joint is currently ranked number 87 in the world and was looking to make it past round one at Wimbledon for the first time.
