Serena Williams is set to make a remarkable return to singles tennis after accepting a wildcard entry into the women’s main draw at Wimbledon.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion was confirmed as the recipient of the final women’s singles wildcard in an announcement made by the All England Club on Sunday.
The decision comes just days before the grass-court Grand Slam gets underway marking another chapter in the career of one of tennis’ greatest players.
“Serena Williams (USA) receives the final ladies’ singles wild card,” read the key line in Sunday’s announcement, which was issued eight days before the grass-court Grand Slam begins.

The 44-year-old recently returned to competitive tennis after a four year absence featuring in two doubles matches earlier this month.
She had already accepted a wildcard to compete in the Wimbledon doubles event alongside her sister Venus Williams, but a singles appearance had remained uncertain until now.
