Samuel Ogazi wins Nigeria’s first men’s 400m Commonwealth gold
Nigeria’s 20-year-old sprinter Samuel Ogazi surged past Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards in the final 100m to claim gold in 44.25 seconds at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ogazi dominated the final with an explosive performance, crossing the finish line in a blistering 44.25 seconds. He finished nearly six meters ahead of his closest competitor and came within just 10 milliseconds of the championship record (44.24s).
Richards who came second behind Ogazi won silver in the race finished in 44.82 seconds, while South Africa’s Zakiti Nene took home the bronze medal after finishing the distance in 45 21 seconds.

Ogazi becomes Nigeria’s first man to win the 400m men’s title ahead matching the feat of his compatriot Fatima Yusuf who won the women’s 400m event at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
Fresh off a Games Record semi-final win and NCAA titles earlier in 2026, Ogazi’s victory highlighted Nigeria’s strong athletics run amid a packed day of finals and field events.
