Roberto Martinez steps down as Portugal coach after loss to Spain
The coach of the Portuguese national team Roberto Martinez has stepped down from his role following his team’s heartbreaking Round of 16 loss to Iberian rivals Spain.
After the game against Spain, the coach confirmed it was his final game in charge of the Portuguese national team.
Martinez thanked the Portuguese FA and the fans for the incredible periods and memories shared saying he cherishes the moments with pride.
“It is true that it was my last game with the Portugal national team,” he said.
“Thank you to the Portuguese people because it was an incredible period, a pride which I can’t describe.

“All that strength and energy we had from all the fans, from all the Portuguese people, was incredible.
“Thank you for this and I take with me memories for life.”
The 52-year-old Spaniard who leaves the saddle following the expiry of his contract, took charge of Portugal in 2023 after previously managing Belgium national team, Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton.
Under his management, Portugal reached the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024 and the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He finished his tenure as Portugal manager with an official record of 32 wins, 6 draws, and 7 defeats across 45 matches.
