Rangers defeat Bayelsa Utd to boost NPFL title hopes

Enugu Rangers earned a stunning 2-0 away win over Bayelsa United in Yenagoa to maintain their lead in the 2025-26 Nigeria Premier Football League title race on Sunday.

The Flying Antelopes grabbed the maximum points thanks to goals from Chidiebere Nwobodo, who produced a composed finish in the first half to break the deadlock.

Godwin Obaje added the second goal to further plunge Bayelsa United into relegation trouble.

The result ensured Rangers maintained their one point lead over second-placed Rivers United with two matches remaining in the NPFL.

The defeat was a major blow for Bayelsa United in their bid to escape relegation as they currently occupy the bottom position on the log.

Rivers United produced a sensational performance to brush aside Abia Warriors 3-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The first half ended goalless but the hosts turned on the fire in the second half with goals from Wasiu Falolu, Sylvester Bell and Bello Babatunde to earn the maximum points.

The victory moved the Pride of Rivers to 61 points on the log with one point behind leaders Enugu Rangers with two games remaining.

In Ibadan, Shooting Stars defeated Nasarawa United 3-2 at the Lekan Salami Stadium to boost their continental hopes.

Lucky Emmanuel scored a brace for the hosts before JoFrank Istifanus and Habibu Alakija restored parity for Nasarawa United.

Qamar Adegoke scored the winning goal for Shooting Stars with 13 minutes from time to seal the maximum points.

The Oluyole Warriors are in third with 57 points, two points above Ikorodu City in fourth.

Defending Champions Remo Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Enyimba in Aba to dampen their chances of escaping relegation.

The Sky Blue Stars are languishing in the 18th position with 43 points.

Kun Khalifat FC stunned Kano Pillars 2-1, while Warri Wolves defeated Plateau United 1-0.

Niger Tornadoes and Kwara United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, Barau FC spanked El- Kanemi Warriors 3-0.

Ikorodu City will take on Wikki Tourists on Tuesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Action continues in the NPFL next weekend with title contenders, Rivers United and Enugu Rangers in action while the likes of Remo Stars, Wikki Tourists, Bayelsa United, and Kun Khalifat battle for safety.
