Nigeria’s Adeshina wins first NCAA outdoor title

Nigerian high jumper Temitope Adeshina won her first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) outdoor title on Sunday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Adeshina recorded a 1.96m on her first attempt to win her NCAA title.

In the process, she completes an undefeated season and a sweep of both NCAA indoor and outdoor titles.

She became the second Texas Tech athlete to win at least three national titles, joining Sally Kipyego.

She is also the first Red Raider to win the women’s high jump at the outdoor championships since Zarriea Willis triumphed in Austin in 2019.

Adeshina’s first miss of the competition came at the final bar of 1.99m (6-6 ¼). Prior to that, the junior had cleared the first six bars. She brings home Tech’s first national title in the event outdoors since 2019 when Zarriea Willis won in Austin.

She enjoyed an incredible season, finishing unbeaten in every competition she entered.

Adeshina joined Texas Tech University in 2023, and competing indoors in early 2024 jumped a personal best and national record height of 1.96 metres in Texas.

At the NCAA Championship in Eugene on 8 June 2024 she jumped a personal best, and national record, 1.97 metres to meet the Olympic 2024 qualifying standard

She competed in the high jump for Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In March, she won the 2026 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.
