Middlesbrough to receive £20m from Rogers’ £117m transfer to Chelsea
The account balance of English Championship team Middlesbrough is about to increase as the club will receive the sum of £20 million from Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers’ record £117 million transfer to Chelsea FC.
When Middlesbrough sold Morgan Rogers to Aston Villa in January 2024, they negotiated a sell-on clause for 20% of any profit Villa made on a future sale of the player.
The breakdown of the financial windfall includes a 20% profit clause. Villa sold Rogers to Chelsea for £117 million and since Boro originally sold him for £15.5 million, Villa’s profit on the transfer is £101.5 million with the 20% sell-on fee from this profit equating to £20.3 million.
Because the sell-on clause is specifically calculated from the massive profit Aston Villa is generating, Middlesbrough’s payout scales significantly higher than initial flat estimates.

Reports say new Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso was involved in Chelsea’s secret mission to get the player. Alonso reportedly spoke to Rogers, and presented tactical project which was key to get the green light from the player to close the deal.
Rogers is expected to be in London on Monday for medical tests with all documents ready for the player to sign until June 2032 (6-years) with an option for further season.
Chelsea FC successfully hijacked interest from London rivals Arsenal to secure the services of Rogers who moves to Stamford Bridge for a record deal, surpassing the £116 million Manchester City paid to sing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
