Five reasons a Mourinho return to Real Madrid could work

Jose Mourinho

Spanish club Real Madrid are on the path tk a redemption so to speak following a trophyless season characterized by managerial instability and dressing room discord involving senior players.

Newly re-elected president Florentine Perez has vowed to return the club to winning ways with a promise to secure the club’s 16th Champions League title as his next target for the illustrious club.

To achieve that promise, Perez wasted no time in announcing the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club’s new coach for the second time ahead of the fast approaching 2026/2027 football season.

“We are proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a proper Madridista…” Perez said while confirming the appointment of Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach has wasted no time in his team rebuild as he has set the ball rolling with the signing of Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool on deal until June 2030 and Denzel Dumfries for a €20 million transfer fee from Inter Milan.

Mourinho has also given the green light for the contract extension of Germany defender Antony Rudiger until 2027 with other blockbuster signings to follow according to reports.

The move to appoint Mourinho is considered by many as a positive decision to salvage the dwindling fortunes of the club and in this article, we highlight five reasons why Perez may be right to make the call.

INSTILL DISCIPLINE

One of the reasons Mourinho was re-appointed was to fix a team that seems to be lacking discipline and an uncompromising figure like the Portuguese coach who is known for not tolerating entitlement is capable of commanding immediate respect and ensure that the club’s massive talents stay grounded.

TRACK RECORD

Mourinho has a track record of winning trophies in multiple countries including Portugal, Italy, England and Spain. He is also credited by Pérez with laying the competitive foundation that later allowed Real Madrid to dominate Europe.

SIEGE MENTALITY

Mourinho, regarded as one of the world’s most decorated coaches is a master at drawing media attention away from his players and creating a “us vs. the world” environment that unites the dressing room of the Spanish club that thrives on defying external pressure.

PROVEN BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS

Mourinho who is one of only seven managers to have won the European Cup with two clubs, and is the only manager to have won all three current UEFA club competitions possesses a history of breaking rivals’ hegemony. In his first tenure (2010–2013), he successfully ended Pep Guardiola’s dominant Barcelona era, notably securing the record-breaking 100-point La Liga title while scoring 121 goals in 2011.

TACTICAL SUITABILITY

The current Real Madrid roster with explosive players like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicious Jnr, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo is tailored for fast, direct, and lethal counter-attacking football.

Mourinho’s pragmatism and nous as a seasoned coach perfectly complements the current dynamic and transition-heavy strengths of Real Madrid’s talented squad.
