Europe’s Opening Weekend: Five results that stunned fans

PSG vs Rennes

The 2026-27 European football leagues kicked off officially last weekend with the Premier League, French Ligue 1 and the Italian Serie A clubs in action.

FirstDailySports takes a look at the top five shocking results in the top five leagues last weekend.

1. Hull City 2-0 Manchester United

The Tigers earned a shock win over Manchester United in their first game of the season thanks to goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy to condemn the visitors to an embarrassing defeat.

Hull City marked their return to the Premier League since the 2016-17 season with a memorable victory over Manchester United for the first time in the club’s history.

They will be hoping to build on the impressive win ahead of the second league game of the season against Coventry City on Saturday.

2. Brighton 4-0 Aston Villa

It was a shocking start for Aston Villa in the 2026-27 Premier League season following an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts breezed to a 4-0 lead in the first 31 minutes of the encounter to stun a depleted Aston Villa side.

Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez were left out of the squad as they closed in on their exits.

Aston Villa have sold four players out of their starting XI in the Europa League final last season with Martinez and Watkins set to join the list to make it six.

It was the most unexpected result in the Premier League on the opening weekend, struggling for a spot with Hull City’s suprise victory over Manchester United.

Aston Villa have the opportunity to bounce back against Arsenal on Monday night at Villa Park.

Brighton are currently leading the Premier League table with three points and four goals.

3. Rennes 2-2 PSG

French Ligue 1 defending champions PSG started the 2026-27 campaign with a disappointing draw against Rennes on Sunday.

The Luis Enrique-led side fought back from a 2-0 deficit thanks to a brace from new signing, Ferran Torres to snatch a point away from home.

PSG struggled to find their rhythm against Rennes in the first half before Torres came off the bench to open his Ligue 1 goal-scoring account.

Up next for PSG is a clash against Lille on Friday while Rennes will take on Le Mans on Sunday.

4. Udinese 1-1 Como

Last season’s suprise package Como snatched a 1-1 draw against Udinese in their first game of the season.

Hassane Kamara opened the scoring for Udinese in the 29th minute before Anastasios Douvikas brought Como back into the game in the second half to earn a point for the Champions League campaigners.

Cesc Fabregas will be hoping his team can bounce back in their second league game against Napoli on Sunday at the Diego Maradona Stadium.

5. Athletic Bilbao 1-3 Sevilla

Sevilla recorded a stunning 3-1 away win over Athletic Bilbao to continue their impressive start to the season thanks to goals from Super Eagles winger, Chidera Ejuke, Oso and Isaac Romero.

It was a stunning win for Sevilla, who struggled to escape relegation last season against a Bilbao side competed in the Champions League last season.

Sevilla have now won their first two games of the season to go top of the table, they will be aiming to continue their stunning start to the season when they take on Atletico Madrid at home on Saturday.
